Smetana's Travels to Franz Liszt

pp. 141–145 (Czech), 145 (English)

When Bedřich Smetana decided to embark on a musical career without the support of his parents, he wrote in his diary in 1835 that with "God's help" he "would one day be a Mozart in composition and a Liszt in technique" (Mit Gottes Hilfe und Gnade bin ich einst in der Mechanik ein Liszt, in dem Componieren ein Mozart). His contacts with Liszt date to the following decade, from which unfortunately very few sources have survived. From these accounts the author attempts to get a picture of Liszt's influence on Smetana and, above all, to show that Liszt inspired him to compose his one-movement symphonic poems.
