Josef Kajetán Tyl and the Folk Educational Periodicals in the Revolutionary Era of 1848 to 1849

In his periodicals The Prague Messenger and Sedlské Noviny, Josef Kajetán Tyl was regarded as a “teacher of the nation” in the revolutionary era between 1848 and 1849. The initial effort was to bring a periodical to the reader in the Czech village, where he could learn important information about the current political situation and learn and understand his rights in the context of the revolutionary efforts. The Prague Messenger and Sedlské Noviny were founded and modified in their language and layout, with the purpose to agitate, educate and teach Czech readers. The period’s politics affected both periodicals and they unfortunately only fulfilled their purpose for a very brief period of time.
