Monsieur Capital: On the Iconography of Mammon and Money in the Work of František Kupka

pp. 321–332 (Czech), 332 (English)

The 1902 monothematic issue L'Argent ('Money'), created by František Kupka for the satirical magazine L'Assiette au Beurre served as an indictment of the rule of money over the world, as symbolized by his invention of the character 'Monsieur Capital' - an updated version of the traditional depiction of avarice and Mammon which also drew on modern iconography of the banker from cartoons of the period. In Kupka's treatment, it becomes a negative symbol of the power of money in society at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
