On the Formation of Symbolic Capital in the Initial Phase of the Formation of the Slovak Romantic Generation

pp. 269–280, 279 (English)

This study focuses on the formation of collective identity in its initial phase as a process of building symbolic capital (P. Bourdieu), drawing on the example of a group of Romantics. Within the framework of modelling cultural capital of the Romantics, and with the aim of determining social status, I will focus primarily on a selection of German universities. The community of Slovak Romantics is approached from the point of view of social capital as a relatively permanent network of (semi)institutional relations of mutual recognition, ready to mobilize to meet the needs of the nation. Analysis of the cultural and social capital of the Slovak Romantics is based on period correspondence and autobiographical texts, as well as biographies written by their peers. These are combined into a tableau - a kind of staged image with a purposeful composition, representative function, and ambition to fix and petrify.

Keywords: Romantic generation, German universities, symbolic capital
