Critique of the Literary Market in Vítězslav Hálek’s Journalism
In addition to being a prolific and successful writer, Vítězslav Hálek ranks among the leading Czech journalists and opinion makers of his time. As a journalist, he worked at the periodical Národní listy from the beginning of the 1860s until his death, and was one of its key writers throughout the dynamic changes in Czech journalism during this period. In this sense, he experienced the transformation of the editorial office - headed by Julius Grégr - as it transitioned from a loss-making patriotic coop to a newspaper that accepted the need for profitability. This paper focuses on several of Hálek's texts from the early 1870s that reflect issues connected with the small Czech literary market, problem of royalties, and book sales, as well as various problems endemic to the literary market at the time, such as the interweaving of advertising and literary criticism.
