The problem of individuality in the student notes of Emil Sudek
The intimate medium of the notebook allowed Emil Saudek (b. 1876) to lose himself in paraphrases, quotations, sketches on the interface between himself and others, and to freely test out fragments of contemporary discourse: ideological, aesthetic and other impulses and gestures circulating through the debates of the late 19th century, including various treatments of the problem of individuality or individualism - at different levels and in variations of the basic polarity between a certain determining (everyday) order of things and forms of escape or resistance. At the same time, this paper does not conclude with the discovery of Saudek’s or through him a more general contemporary organized, consistent system. Rather than a traceable narrative of the absolution of opinion, it offers several clues, just in a specific filter mirroring the terrain of the possible.
